Never Settle For A Ripple When You Can Make A Wave

Why Bother Keeping Our Neural Real Estate Healthy?

Neural Real Estate

Ever owned a piece of property? If so then you know the joys as well as the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of owning property.

Whatever kind of real estate we own, whether a new home or an old one, acreage for growing or grazing animals, there is work that has to be done.

When we bought our present home, an old farm house on a large lot, we tore down the old garage and built a new one. We dismantled the dilapidated chicken shed, chopped down tansy and removed a few trees.

The house got new windows, siding and paint. We updated the plumbing and electrical wiring, tore out the old carpet and replaced the gravel driveway with asphalt.

Even with all the improvements, we still have to maintain what we improved. Lawn maintenance and house up-keep continue on a regularly scheduled regiment.

But regardless if you’ve ever owned a home or acreage, everyone of us actually owns a piece of real estate. In her book, Switch on Your Brain Every Day Dr. Caroline Leaf describes our thoughts as “neural real estate.”

Our mind, though an intangible part of ourselves, is important to our overall well being. What we think and how we think determines our decisions and our actions.

Everyone’s neural real estate is different and something different is required for each person’s maintenance plan.

Over the years, getting acquainted with myself has helped me to discover what I need to preserve my neural real estate.

For instance, for me, it starts with the physical; eating what’s good for me, getting a good night’s sleep and plenty of physical activity. Then, I balance work with physical rest, quiet with commotion, and self care with caring for others.

With all that life throws my way, I know that I cannot make good decisions when I’m afraid, under pressure or hurried. Rather better decisions are made when I’m rested, unafraid and give myself time to consider the long-term outcome.

Why Bother?

Why bother keeping our neural real estate healthy? Like any property, our neural real estate is ours to protect and safeguard for a good return.

P.S.  I wrote the story of my journey to forgiveness for those who, like me, know they need to change, but are not quite sure where to start. You can find A Heart’s Journey To Forgiveness at Redemption Press and Amazon.
