Why Bother Being Open to Surprises?

What Time?

I once worked for the local chamber of commerce. My job? To answer the questions posed by the tourists. One day, a visitor asked me, “What time do the animals come out?”

Except for the serious look on her face, I would have laughed, but instead with professional courtesy I said, “They usually meander through town very early in the morning.” This was true, but I’d never thought of the local wildlife as a tourist attraction.

She thanked me and left.

Sometimes, like that tourist, I like to know what is up ahead. Having this knowledge makes me feel prepared, gives me a sense of control as well as a tad bit of confidence.

But, thinking I know what to expect and when to expect it also robs me of being surprised. Surprises are never expected by the one who receives the surprise, that is why they are called surprises. Surprises just happen, without being dictated, choreographed, or planned. These kinds of surprises that I am describing always leave us with a sense of amazement, astonishment, and astoundment. These kinds of surprises cause us to pause and marvel, even for just a moment.

For instance, while on my early morning jogs, it is normal for me to see deer grazing in the open fields as was the case the other day. But, not only did I see deer, I saw a heron, one of my favorite birds. Then just when I didn’t think I’d see any more wildlife, I looked up into the blue June sky and saw a bald eagle. Viewing all this majestic beauty caused me to pause with marvel. Being surrounded by the loveliness of nature filled me up with feeling good.

I’m not only surprised by nature, but sometimes I am surprised by the nature of people; their kind words, the sharing of heartfelt insights, and a genuine interest to give me a hand up when they see I need one.

Why Bother?

Why bother being open to surprises? When I remember to be receptive to surprises, then I am reminded, I am not the blessed controller of all things, just the recipient of good things from the One who is in control of all things.

P. S.  I wrote the story of my journey to forgiveness for those who, like me, know they need to change, but are not quite sure where to start. You can find my book, A Heart’s Journey To Forgiveness at Redemption Press and Amazon.
