Why Bother to Stop Being Miserable?

Stop Being Miserable

My friend and I talk regularly and I can tell by the tone of her voice, how she is doing. As long as I’ve known her, she’s encountered physical and mental obstacles that wear her down. Recently though, her tone tells me that she is feeling perky, even cheery.

So I had to ask, “ What’s perked you up?”

“I was pretty tired of being miserable,” she told me.

And then we laughed.

We’ve all been in or may presently be in situations that are beyond what we never considered to imagine. Health issues, relationships gone awry, and unexpected financial setbacks to name a few.

In the midst of our circumstances, our thinking may constrict, grow narrow, and dim. Though we try our best to change our circumstances for the better, we find we are powerless to do so.  Days, weeks, months and even years go by without anything changing for the better. Then, hopelessness, despair and/or anguish settle down around us and we settle for feeling miserable.

None of us have the power to manipulate circumstances to our benefit. But, we do have the power to change the way we think about our circumstances.

Even though my friend is physically limited and longs to get out for some rigorous walks, she can’t. Since she got pretty tired of being miserable about what she can’t do, she told me she’s found something she appreciates. She has more time for reading books than she’s ever had.

Something else she shared with me. Unable to be a part of a local church body, she’s found encouragement from  sermons online.

It would appear that though her life is limited by her physical impairments, she is no longer allowing those impairments to limit her.

Why Bother?

Why bother to stop being miserable? Changing the way we think about our circumstances can change the way we live. We’ll uncover the things that make us less miserable.

P.S.  I wrote the story of my journey to forgiveness for those who need clarity when it comes to understanding forgiveness. You can find A Heart’s Journey To Forgiveness at Redemption Press and Amazon.
