Why Bother Getting to Know God?

My Bio

I am so very grateful to all of you, my audience. Without you, I’d have no reason to write these blog posts.

Even though I do not personally know all of you by name, face and personality, you know me quite well because you take the time to read my blogs.

You know I’ve been married to the same man since 1980, that I have three sons and that I’ve written a book. You are aware that I am a yoga instructor, and that I like to run and ride my road bike. You know that I grew up in a large family, the sixth of seven, and that my father ended his life by suicide. You are cognizant of my anger, sadness, and impatience because I’ve written candidly about them.

In my blog posts, as well as in my book, I write from my own point of view. On Amazon, I can read the comments you’ve written about my book and some of you email me with your comments about my blog posts. Some of the words you’ve used to describe my writing include; honest, truthful and with vulnerability.

Your comments tell me that you trust me as a writer. Your description of my writing tells me that you believe me and that my writing is not a boondoggle; a wasteful, worthless or pointless activity.  You all, though I don’t know all of you, encourage me to stay true with my writing.

   God’s Bio

Adding one more thing to what you may or may not know about me; I am a fervid reader and quote collector. Most of the books I read are from authors who encourage my faith in God.

For example, just this morning, I read and then wrote down this phrase from Phillip Yancey’s book, Prayer, “…I learned from Psalms to converse with God as I would converse with my employer, my friend, my wife–in short, to treat God as a Person in every sense of the word.”

Yancey’s words caused me to pause and consider; can I convey, to my readers, why I choose to put my faith, my hope and my trust in God?  Can I introduce God, as a person, to my audience?

Although God’s character traits are numerous, I will convey two of God’s character traits, in the best way that I can.

First of all, God is extremely creative and he’s created me in such a way to notice and enjoy his creation.

For example, on a recent bike ride I saw the colors of autumn on display, smelled the rain in the air, felt chilly with the lower temperature, heard the wind in my ears, and tasted the bug that flew into my mouth. In a short amount of time, I got to personally experience God’s creation.

Secondly, I can vouch for God’s truthfulness. In the book of Hebrews chapter 6 verse 21, it says that it is impossible for God to lie.

There is nothing that I hate worse than being lied to. When someone lies, it becomes impossible for me to trust them. But, I can believe that what God says is true and I can count on him to not lie. I value these character traits in God and in people.

So Why Bother?

Why bother getting to know God? If we were to treat God as a person in every sense of the word as Yancey says, then, getting to know God is possible.
