Why Bother Being a Continuous Learner?

Continuous Learner

I am a yoga and swim instructor. I teach others what I know, but at the same time, I continue learning from other instructors. How come? I can honestly say, because I don’t know it all. I will never know everything there is to know about yoga or swimming. There is always something more to learn. Consequently, I call myself a continuous learner.

Being a continuous learner is similar to possessing the attitude of a student. Students aren’t ignorant, but they are curious. Students observe, ask questions, and build relationships with others who know more than they do.

A continuous learner knows what it is like to persist, persevere and struggle productively. Seeking answers to our questions, gaining insight and direction requires that we have a modicum of humility, a willingness to listen and receptivity to the one offering us their wisdom.

Being a continuous learner does not mean I don’t know what I am doing. I have learned enough to instruct others. I’ve passed the tests of certification and have met requirements. I’m no dummy. Yet, I’m willing to keep learning.

Being a continuous learner also applies to my walk of faith. Continually learning is essential to my faith. There is an actual verse in the book of 2 Peter that says, “Grow in grace and in the knowledge of God,” which reminds me that I am never done growing, I am never done learning.

Being a believer with the attitude of a continuous learner means I am ready, willing and able to keep learning more about God’s grace and peace, God’s love and joy, God’s peace and patience, God’s kindness and goodness.

It takes a lifetime to know God, but that is okay because God has all the time in the world for us to get to know him.

Getting to know God does not just benefit us, but getting to know God allows us to extend what we know to others. The love, joy, peace, patience and kindness that we become acquainted with can then be extended toward others.

Why Bother?

Why bother being a continuous learner? The more we learn, the better we can illustrate what we know to others.
