Why Bother Noticing the Simple Privileges We Possess
Simple Privileges
According to the wide range of news resources available to all of us, there isn’t any good news. Random shootings, protests and inflation are the headlines and for some odd reason or another, sad, bad, headlines sell more than good ones.
I like what Paul Harvey once said, “In times like these, it is always good to remember that there have always been times like these.” I’d also add that in times like these, it is good to remember the simple privileges we possess.
Simple privileges, benefits, liberties and freedoms abound. Once we see them, we can’t unsee them.
My day begins around 3:00 a.m. and though I cannot usually stay up late enough to see the night sky, I do see the stars when I arise. Looking up into that dark bowl dotted with twinkling lights is an incredible freedom I possess. I get to view the beauty that is there for me to see.
It is October and the trees, though not in competition, display their vibrant colors with unabashed boldness. There are absolutely no restrictions placed on me to revel at the sight of the drop dead, knockout, bombshell, stunning creation that surrounds me whether it be the stars or the fall colors.
When I go out for an early morning run, I do not have to worry about any restrictions. There are no soldiers standing on the street corners waiting to stop me and ask to see my identification. Instead, I can freely run my four mile route without interruption or hassle.
Recently, I drove into another state to visit one of my sisters. There were no checkpoints between the boarding states and I traveled without restraint or fear.
On our city’s November 4th ballot, we get to choose who we want to serve on our city council as well as whether or not we want a new sewer treatment plant.
I chose to vote early and did not encounter any obstructions to entering the building, voicing my intent to vote or filling out the ballot. As a matter of fact, the clerks were amiable and sociable. It was a pleasant experience and I left the building feeling patriotic because I possess the freedom to vote.
When I go grocery shopping, the shelves are full. Food is not being rationed and I do not have to carry a ration book to buy goods. I buy what I need and what I want.
I am not being shipped off to prison because of my faith, nor does my faith hinder me from working. Though not everyone believes as I do, we each have the freedom to believe in the way we do.
Why Bother
Why bother noticing the simple privileges we possess? Yes, there is sad, bad news, but there will always be sad, bad news. Noticing the simple privileges we possess can help us express gratitude instead of grumbles.
P.S. I wrote the story of my journey to forgiveness for those who, like me, know they need to change, but are not quite sure where to start. You can find A Heart’s Journey To Forgiveness at Redemption Press and Amazon.
