Why Bother Wanting Acceptance?
Acceptance
Being accepted by others is comforting. Knowing that we matter to someone is satisfying. Being approved of is gratifying. But, being accepted by others begins with accepting ourselves.
Early in our lives, if we were fortunate enough, there may have been someone such as a parent, grandparent or maybe a teacher, who saw what we could not see in ourselves.
That someone detected a talent, a colorful flair, or a special ability. We didn’t have to know or understand what they saw before we responded to their encouragement. We simply believed and trusted what they told us about ourselves.
As a result of their prodding, coaxing and rallying, they helped to instill some self confidence in ourselves.
Then we grew up and those who once saw our talent, a colorful flair, or a special ability became dim memories and faded voices. That prodding, coaxing and rallying that had once come from them, has to now come from us.
More than likely we will question ourselves; Can I really do this? Do I really have what it takes? Do I know what I’m talking about? What will others think of me?
But, as we allow ourselves to experience failing by trying; standing by stumbling and maintaining our tenacity for beginning again, we start to believe that we can and that we will.
Believing that we do have what it takes, and that we do know what we are talking about shapes our self-acceptance.
Please do not assume that self-acceptance and arrogance are the same because they are not.
Our growth in becoming who we are is not done in isolation. Rather, our growth into who we are becoming is a shared adventure. We invite others to be constructive and insightful with their words toward us. We welcome their wisdom and appreciate their point of view.
Why Bother?
Why bother wanting to be accepted? Being accepted by others is comforting, satisfying, and gratifying. But, it starts with accepting ourselves
